Paste a GSTIN to check its format and check digit, and see the state and PAN it contains. This is the same screen KIRA runs on every supplier and buyer in a Tally import. It runs in your browser and stores nothing.
What the check covers
- Format: 2-digit state code, the holder's 10-character PAN, an entity number, the letter Z, and a check character.
- Check digit: the last character is calculated from the first 14. A mismatch almost always means a typing error.
- State and holder type: read from the state code and the PAN.
What it does not cover
It does not tell you whether the registration is active, cancelled or suspended, or the legal name. Check those on the official GST portal (gst.gov.in → Search Taxpayer). GST-return data verification through BizOS is coming soon.
Questions we are asked
How do I check if a GSTIN is valid?
A valid GSTIN has 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, a 10-character PAN, an entity number, the letter Z and a check character calculated from the first 14. This tool checks all of these instantly.
What do the first two digits of a GSTIN mean?
They are the state code where the business is registered. For example, 27 is Maharashtra.
Does a valid GSTIN mean the business is active?
No. A valid format only means the number is well formed. Check registration status and legal name on the official GST portal.
