How to improve your CMR
Reviewed 4 November 2026 · Prateesh Nair, BISFIOPS Private Limited
Your CMR improves when your credit history improves: pay every instalment on time, keep cash credit and overdraft use comfortably below the limit, and avoid a burst of new applications. The rank reads 24 months of history, so expect gradual change, not a quick fix. Background in the CMR guide.
What moves the rank, in order of effect
- Overdue days. Any instalment or interest paid late shows as days past due. Clearing overdues and keeping every account at zero days past due is the single most important habit.
- Limit utilisation. A cash credit or overdraft used close to its full limit month after month looks like stress, even when interest is paid. Keeping average use well below the limit helps.
- New applications. Several lender enquiries in a short window can read as credit hunger. Apply where you are likely to be approved.
- Account history. Long-running accounts repaid well help. Settled or written-off accounts hurt for a long time.
These are widely cited lender factors, not TransUnion CIBIL's published weighting, which is not public.
What you can fix in one quarter
- Clear every overdue amount and set auto-debit for EMIs and interest.
- Bring cash credit use down: collect old debtors, hold back non-urgent stock purchases, or move long-term needs to a term loan so the CC is not used as permanent capital.
- Stop new applications until the file is clean.
- Check the Company Credit Report for errors, such as a closed loan still shown open, and raise a dispute with the bureau.
What takes three quarters or more
- Building a run of on-time months after past delays.
- Showing steady, moderate use of limits over several statement cycles.
- Letting older delays age out of the recent window.
How to read your own limit usage
Take your sanctioned CC or OD limit and the month-end balance for each of the last six months. Divide each balance by the limit. If most months are near or above 90%, the account is stretched. The working capital calculator shows whether your limit matches your turnover, which is often the real fix: a limit that is too small for the business will always look over-used.
A two-quarter action plan
- Month 1: pull or request the Company Credit Report, list every account, and clear overdues.
- Months 1–2: fix errors with the bureau; set auto-debit; agree a monthly cash-flow plan for the CC.
- Months 2–4: keep every account at zero days past due and bring average CC use down.
- Months 4–6: if the limit is genuinely too small, apply once for an enhancement with current GST returns and stock statements.
No adviser can promise a specific rank or a date. These steps put the habits the rank reads in your favour.
Questions we are asked
How long does it take to improve CMR?
There is no fixed timeline. CMR reads 24 months of history, so most businesses need two to three quarters of clean repayment and lower limit use before the effect shows.
Does using my full CC limit lower my CMR?
Using a cash credit or overdraft close to its full limit month after month is widely read by lenders as stress, even if interest is paid. Keeping average use below the limit helps.
Can a wrong entry in my report be corrected?
Yes. Raise a dispute with TransUnion CIBIL with proof, such as a closure letter. The bureau checks with the lender and corrects the record if it is wrong.
