CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR): what it is and how it works

Reviewed 4 November 2026 · Prateesh Nair, BISFIOPS Private Limited

CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR) is TransUnion CIBIL's credit risk rank for businesses, on a scale of 1 to 10. CMR-1 is the lowest risk and CMR-10 the highest. It estimates how likely a business is to turn into a non-performing asset within 12 months, and lenders read it before they look at your loan application.

What is CMR in CIBIL?

CMR stands for CIBIL MSME Rank. TransUnion CIBIL created it for banks and other lenders, to rank micro, small and medium enterprises by credit risk. It is built from a business's credit history held at the bureau, so it reflects how the business has actually borrowed and repaid, not how it describes itself.

The rank sits in the Company Credit Report that lenders pull when you apply for a business loan, cash credit limit or overdraft.

How the CMR scale works

The scale runs from 1 to 10, and lower is better. This is the opposite of a personal CIBIL score, where a higher number is better.

TransUnion CIBIL does not publish a pass mark. Each lender decides which ranks it will approve, at what price, and with what conditions. Many lenders treat the low end of the scale as comfortable and the top end as high risk, but those cut-offs are a lender's choice, not a TransUnion rule. What each rank usually means to a lender.

Who gets a CMR?

CMR applies to MSMEs whose total borrowing from lenders is up to ₹50 crore. When TransUnion CIBIL enhanced the rank in April 2020, it extended it to businesses with total borrowing below ₹10 lakh as well, which brought many very small businesses into scope.

A business needs a credit history at the bureau to be ranked. If you have never borrowed formally, or the history is too thin, your report may show no rank. Check the current rules with TransUnion CIBIL, because eligibility can change. Why a CMR can be missing.

How is CMR calculated?

TransUnion CIBIL describes CMR as a machine-learning model. It is calculated from 24 months of a business's credit history and trained on more than seven years of past credit data. The exact formula is not public.

From how lenders read credit reports, these are the behaviours that matter most:

These are widely cited factors, not a published weighting. Treat them as the right habits, not as a score sheet.

CMR vs your CIBIL score

A CIBIL score is a three-digit number from 300 to 900 for an individual. CMR is a 1 to 10 rank for a business. A promoter can have a strong personal score while the business has a weak CMR, and the reverse. For an MSME loan, lenders commonly look at both. Read the full comparison.

Why lenders look at CMR

CMR gives a lender a fast, consistent read on risk. In the 2020 launch, TransUnion CIBIL said it was designed to help with approving new loans and with monitoring existing portfolios. Bank of Baroda said at the time that it used CMR for risk-based pricing, so that deserving businesses could get cheaper credit. In practice a weaker rank can mean a higher rate, tighter conditions, or a file that is not opened at all. The size of that effect differs by lender. CMR and business loan rates.

What helps a better CMR

There is no shortcut, because the rank reflects your history. What you can do is protect the behaviours it reads: pay every instalment on time, keep utilisation of your limits comfortably below the maximum, and avoid a string of loan applications in a short window. Most owners need two to three quarters of clean conduct to see the effect. See the improvement checklist, or try the two-minute readiness check.

Questions we are asked

What does CMR stand for?

CMR stands for CIBIL MSME Rank, a business credit risk rank from TransUnion CIBIL.

Is a lower CMR better?

Yes. CMR-1 is the lowest risk and CMR-10 the highest, so a lower number is better.

Is CMR the same as a CIBIL score?

No. A CIBIL score is a 300 to 900 number for an individual. CMR is a 1 to 10 rank for a business.

What does CMR predict?

It predicts the chance that a business becomes a non-performing asset within the next 12 months.

Does every business have a CMR?

No. A business needs a credit history at the bureau and borrowing within the eligible range, so some businesses show no rank.
