CMR vs CIBIL score: what is the difference?
Reviewed 4 November 2026 · Prateesh Nair, BISFIOPS Private Limited
A CIBIL score is a 300 to 900 number for an individual, where higher is better. CMR is a 1 to 10 rank for a business, where lower is better. For an MSME loan, lenders commonly read the business's CMR and the promoters' personal scores together. More in the CMR guide.

Which one does my lender check?
For a business loan, a lender commonly pulls the Company Credit Report, which carries the CMR, and the personal reports of the promoters, partners or directors. Small loans to proprietorships may lean more on the owner's personal record, because the owner and the business are legally the same. The mix varies by lender and by product.
Can my personal score be good while CMR is weak?
Yes. A promoter who pays personal loans and cards on time can still run a business whose cash credit is always at the limit or whose instalments slip. The reverse also happens: a sound business can be held back by a promoter's missed personal payments. A loan file sees both, which is why fixing only one side rarely works.
Do I need both to be good?
Usually you want both in good shape before applying. A strong CMR with a weak promoter score, or the other way round, often means a smaller amount, a higher rate or extra conditions. Lenders decide the weight they give each.

Questions we are asked
What is the difference between CMR and a CIBIL score?
A CIBIL score is a 300 to 900 number for an individual, where higher is better. CMR is a 1 to 10 rank for a business, where lower is better.
Do lenders check both CMR and the promoter CIBIL score?
Commonly, yes. For an MSME loan, lenders often read the business's Company Credit Report and the personal reports of its promoters. The mix varies by lender.
Can a good personal score make up for a weak CMR?
Not fully. A strong personal score helps, but a weak CMR still signals business credit stress. Lenders may offer less, charge more or add conditions.
